Hair Transplant Q & A

How does a hair transplant work?

During a hair transplant at Humble Dermatology, your skilled provider Dr. Egesi takes grafts from areas of the body that contain healthy hair. This area is called the donor site. It's usually on your head, at the back of your scalp, where the hair is thickest.

Dr. Egesi then moves the grafts to hairless parts of the scalp. Once the transplanted skin heals, it should continue to grow hair.

Why would someone need a hair transplant?

A hair transplant may help with permanent hair loss caused by:

Androgenic alopecia

In men, androgenic alopecia is often referred to as male pattern baldness and causes a receding hairline and steadily thinning hair until partial or total baldness occurs. This type of hair loss is connected to conditions like heart disease and prostate enlargement in men.

In women, the hairline doesn't recede, but the hair thins overall and is often the result of hormone imbalance.

Central cicatricial alopecia

Central cicatricial alopecia is a common cause of hair loss in women of color. The hair sheds mainly in the crown area and then moves outward in a circle. The condition may be related to heredity, weaves or extensions, hot oils, relaxers, and other products.

Traction alopecia

Traction alopecia can happen when you wear your hair tightly pulled back in a ponytail, bun, or braids for long periods. Constant stress on the hair follicles can cause damage or accelerated hair loss.

Who is a candidate for hair replacement?

You may be a candidate for a hair transplant if you:

  • Are generally in good health
  • Still have areas of thick hair growth on your scalp
  • Have realistic expectations about hair transplant results

If you think you might be a good fit for a hair transplant, schedule a consultation with Dr. Egesi to discuss treatment in more depth.
